For as long as I can remember, Ryan had always been talking about us getting married. All the time, out of the blue, he would say "Will you marry me?". I always warned him he'd better quit fooling around because when he was actually serious I wouldn't believe him. In the summer of 2005, we made plans to relocate to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, in the fall for a teaching job he'd been offered. I had told him that I didn't want to live together without at least being engaged, so I hoped the proposal would be coming sometime during the summer.
One night Ryan called and said that we should go to the movies sometime that week since we hadn't gone out in awhile. So, we made plans to go on the night I got off work the earliest, June 29th. I made sure my favorite jeans were clean for that night. However, after I got home from work and started hurriedly getting ready, I got a surprise. My sister Kelly's pug, Rudy, had peed on my bedroom floor, and I stepped in it, soaking my favorite jeans. I had to change again, just like the first date. Thus, I was not in the greatest of moods when it was time for us to leave.
We went to Destinta to see Bewitched, because I thought it looked like something I would like, and it also had Will Ferrell in it for Ryan. (Another Will Ferrell movie!) We were the only people in the theater besides a family of three. It just so happens that there are two scenes in the movie where Will Ferrell's character asks Nicole Kidman's character to marry him. Right as Will Ferrell was down on one knee the second time, Ryan asks me "Will You Marry Me?". As I said before, he did this a lot, so I thought he was just joking again, and said, "You're not serious". But, to my surprise, he reaches in his pocket, pulls out a ring, and puts it on my finger! I was speechless! All I could do was hug and kiss him. I was still a little skeptical though, since he has a habit of trying to trick me. Oddly enough, though, the movie reel got tangled and they had to stop the movie and turn the lights on. That was the first time I got to see my beautiful, very real engagement ring.
